Test of General Driving Skills

The practical driving test generally lasts for roughly 40 minutes and throughout this time, you’ll be tested on your general driving ability and your ability to safely reverse your vehicle.

Your ability to reverse your vehicle safely will be demonstrated by the completion of one of the following exercises:

  • reverse parking
  • turning in the road
  • reversing around a corner

At some point during the test you may also be asked to carry out an emergency stop.

Relax & Remember Your Training

Throughout your driving test it is important to try and relax and remember to drive in the way that your instructor has taught you. The preparation that you will have received will have covered every base and the test is not set up to try and catch you out. You just need to demonstrate the ability that you will have shown during your tuition.

If you make a mistake, you should not let it play on your mind as it doesn’t have to have been a serious one which will play a pivotal role in your result. However, if at any time your examiner considers your driving to be a danger to other road users your test will be stopped.

Your practical driving test will include approximately ten minutes of independent driving. This is designed to assess your ability to drive safely while making decisions independently.

The driving test is straightforward and has been designed to see if you:

  • can drive safely in different road and traffic conditions
  • know The Highway Code and can show this through your driving
