You Don’t Hear This Every Day!!

A self-employed joiner has been banned from driving after he was arrested for drink driving during his stag do. James Whittaker, 31, had been bought a mini off-road bike by his stags as a present and it was given to him on a night out in Honley, West Yorkshire. He was then abandoned by his friends and jumped onto the bike to get back to his best man’s house.

Police saw him wobbling along the road and discovered that he was under the influence of alcohol at 11.30pm on July 13. Magistrates were told that the ban would have a ‘monumental’ effect on his job, but he was banned for 12 months.

he Tjoiner admitted driving while over the prescribed limit when he appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court. Prosecutor Vanessa Jones, said Whittaker’s breath smelled of alcohol and he was found to have 42mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath – the legal limit is 35.

Would Introducing This Be a Good Idea?

Durham Police is going to offer drink-driving offenders new devices which will breathalyse them before their car starts.

The pilot scheme, which is the first for the UK, uses “interlocks” to immobilise cars if the driver is over the legal limit.

Drivers will be forced to take a breath test before starting their car and again at random points during a journey, with the results sent to police officers in real time via a mobile network.

Durham Police says the devices are already common in the US and Denmark, and are being offered free of charge in the force’s area to offenders on a voluntary basis.

Elsewhere in the world, the devices can be fitted to cars as part of a court sentence for people found guilty of drink-driving.

Andy Crow, the detective inspector leading the move, said: “This really is an innovative project which is a first for the UK and will hopefully help us identify and deal with potential drink-drivers before they even get behind the wheel.

“A number of offenders in our area have a problematic relationship with alcohol and we hope, as part of a wider programme, this will help them address their issues.”

How Much Do YOU Know About French Driving Laws??

Almost six in 10 UK drivers know nothing about a new raft of driving laws introduced in France this year.
A survey undertaken by RAC Europe shows that over half of continent-bound drivers (59%) are unaware of the changes, with many also concerned about the impact of Brexit on their future travel options.

The majority of motorists expect the cost and hassle of driving abroad to increase after the UK leaves the European Union.

The RAC is urging drivers to make themselves aware of the changes to France’s driving laws, and has called for the UK government to provide more assurances about what to expect from Brexit.

The survey of 1,400 drivers shows that almost four-fifths (78%) of motorists are unaware that speed limits on France’s secondary roads was reduced on 1 July from 90kph to 80kph (55mph to 50mph).

Is Your Car British Made?

ONCE UPON a time many of Britain’s drivers would choose a new car because it was built in the UK. Those days appear to be over. Production for the domestic market has fallen by 47% in a year, meaning nearly nine in ten cars built here are for export.

The industry body said that car manufacturers were facing a ‘perfect storm’, with falling consumer confidence, tough new emissions and fuel economy tests and the looming summer holiday season pushing down demand for domestically built cars by nearly half, in June.

“This is massive by any terms,” said Mike Hawes from the motor trade body the SMMT, adding that the industry was “surprised at the severity” of the fall in volume.

More than one million people work direct or indirectly for the UK car industry.

Sales of cars in the UK are predicted to drop by 6% on last year’s 2.5m total, following a 5% fall on the previous year. By contrast, Europe as a whole has grown by 2.7% in the first six months of the year.

Hawes warns bumps in the road remain for UK car makers, as Brexit and the threat of a tariff-driven trade war between the US and Europe could cause more pain still. “We can’t afford to lose just-in-time production,” he said, referring to the time-sensitive manufacturing supply chain that could be affected if car parts are delayed crossing borders.

Bosses at Jaguar Land Rover have been leading calls for clarity over Brexit.

Don’t Fall Foul of This Little Known Driving Law!

Rule 97 of the Highway Code instructs motorists to have “footwear and clothing which does not prevent you using the controls in the correct manner”.

As flip flops have poor grip, and can move around while you’re while driving, they are not deemed to be suitable.

Wearing the incorrect footwear may obstruct you from carrying out an emergency stop, which can lead to collisions.

Driving without shoes on is also deemed to be dangerous as it can cause your feet to slip off the pedals.

The RAC advises you wear shoes that provide adequate grip.

Driving Standards Agency recommendations echo this: “Suitable shoes are particularly important behind the wheel.

“We would not recommend driving barefoot because you don’t have the same braking force with bare feet as you do with shoes on.”

Drivers are also advised not to wear bulky footwear that restricts ankle movement.

Is Driving Ruining Your Relationship

The car is one of the most common places to have a dispute with your partner – but there are a few simple steps you can follow to avoid bickering on the road

So it’s no wonder that the car is one of the most likely places for an argument with your significant other.

According to a study by carwow, around a quarter of Brits will get into a row with their significant other at least once a week while in the car.

And bickering on the road could be affecting relationships on a bigger scale, with around one in eight saying they often go more than a day before speaking to their partner again after a driving dispute.

But there are a few simple steps drivers can follow to make sure their time on the road doesn’t lead to a bust-up with a loved one.

The study took tips from Dr Sandi Mann, Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Central Lancashire, to show drivers how to avoid an argument behind the wheel.

This Is a New One!!

A bin lorry became stuck in Berkshire as roads across the country have been melting in the heatwave.

Old Bath Road in Newbury was blocked after the refuse collection and recycling truck’s back wheels sank into the road surface, as the mercury went above 30 degrees in some parts of the UK.

The crew were thrown forward when the lorry suddenly lurched to a halt as the road collapsed under it.

The vehicle caused traffic problems in the town centre on Thursday as drivers tried to find ways around the blockage.

Thames Valley Police confirmed the road was closed “when a council refuse vehicle got stuck after the road appeared to open up”.

Summer Has Played Havoc With Our Roads!

Sinkhole traps truck as UK heatwave takes toll on roads

Refuse lorry towed from hole in Newbury and man rescued from tarmac in Newcastle.

The UK is forecast to bask in hot weather for a third weekend in a row, with temperatures of more than 30C widely predicted, but for some the heatwave is proving too much.

Excessive heat has forced the cancellation of a series of events including pet shows in Halifax and Cheltenham and a lantern festival in Derbyshire. The hot spell has also opened up a number of sinkholes in roads.

A council refuse truck had to be towed out of Old Bath Road in Newbury, Berkshire, after getting submerged in a sinkhole. Veolia, which owns the truck, said none of its crew were hurt in the incident.

In Heaton in Newcastle fire crews were called after a man got his foot stuck in a sinkhole when the the tarmac melted. Tyne and Wear fire and rescue service said the 24-year-old man, who has not been named, had to be freed with a hammer and chisel.

A New Sign Detect Mobile Phone Usage Whilst Driving

The UK is testing signs that detect when phones are used in cars

Four signs are being trialled in Norfolk. They flash when a phone signal is detected around a car – but can’t tell who is using the phone.

Weary of drivers still using their phones behind the wheel, one area of the UK is using tech in an attempt to stop people from picking-up their handsets. The technology, developed by Norfolk-based Westcotec, can detect phone usage in cars, similar to a speed indicator sign and it’s hoped new signs will persuade motorists to change their behaviour.

Westcotec’s system is made of two separate but linked parts. The first is an antenna which picks up various mobile signal standards – from 4G down to GPRS (2G). The second is the LED display, which is installed further down the road. When it detects a radio signal from the antenna assembly, the sign lights up with an image reminding drivers that they should be concentrating on the road, not their emails.

The original version was made in 2014 and a version is now being tested on public roads in the UK. The idea is to make drivers aware they shouldn’t be using their phones. The original prototype of the phone quickly became outdated – partially due to the phone image on the sign. “The pictogram that was used on the sign was one with push buttons and an aerial” says Chris Spinks, a member of Westcotec’s sales and marketing team. Spinks was previously road policing chief inspector for the Norfolk and Suffolk Roads Policing Unit. “When we did a bit of research around what the new pictogram would look like, most people under 25 thought it was a calculator or a walkie talkie.”
