Is This The Key To Increasing The Popularity of Electric Cars

Carmakers are perfecting a new form of solid-state battery technology designed to eliminate one of the chief concerns among prospective EV buyers – range anxiety.

oday’s electric cars, from the Tesla Model 3 saloon to Jaguar’s I-Pace crossover, are all powered by lithium-ion batteries. These cells, which have been around for decades, are relatively cheap to charge but can’t compete with the range of petrol or diesel cars, leaving EV owners anxious about running out of power between charging stations.

However, it will be a different story when the “miraculous” new solid-state battery technology makes its way into production cars, says Autocar.

What are solid-state batteries?

As the name suggests, solid-state batteries are composed of “solid lithium electrodes” set in rigid “conductive” material such as ceramic or a polymer, reports Alphr.

By contrast, conventional lithium-ion batteries use solid lithium electrodes and are encased in a “chemical electrolyte”.

So why are they better than lithium-ion batteries?

Replacing the wet electrolyte with a solid means that the new batteries should be easier to make – and therefore cheaper – than the lithium-ion versions, says Top Gear.

Do You Ever Fill Up Your Car On The Motorway?

Fuel prices have soared over the past few decades and now cost drivers significantly more to refuel their vehicle than before. There was a time in the not too distant past where fuel cost under £1 a litre. However, fuel prices roughly cost in excess of 120p per litre, which adds when you’re filling up a car. Drivers are being warned about the massive price disparity between local petrol stations and motorway service stations as the latter can be hugely more expensive.

The figures from PetrolPrices.com found that some motorway service stations are charging motorists almost 40p per litre more for a litre of fuel.

For example, if you refuelled at the Leicester Forest East on the M1 you’d pay 167.9 pence per litre of diesel but if you chose to fuel at the nearby Sainsbury’s at Fosse Park and you’ll be charged 37p less (130.9p).

Its a similar story for petrol cars too. If you refuelled at Bridgwater services M5 Somerset you’d pay 148.9p per litre which is 29p more than the closest cheapest fuel station at Sainsburys Bridgwater where unleaded cars 119.9p per litre.

Kitty Bates, consumer spokesperson at PetrolPrices.com, said: “Our research shows that many motorway service stations are pricing their fuel well over the odds with some stations charging up to 37p per litre more than their nearest forecourt operator.

Are Electric Cars Too Quiet?

New electric vehicles will have to feature a noise-emitting device, under an EU rule coming into force on Monday.

It follows concerns that low-emission cars and vans are too quiet, putting pedestrians at risk because they cannot be heard as they approach.

All new types of four-wheel electric vehicle must be fitted with the device, which sounds like a traditional engine.

A car’s acoustic vehicle alert system (Avas) must sound when reversing or travelling below 12mph (19km/h).

The EU says the cars are most likely to be near pedestrians when they are backing up or driving slowly, although drivers will have the power to deactivate the devices if they think it is necessary.

Where Are The UK’s Most Frustrating Places To Drive?

Are you a driver whose blood boils at the sight of traffic jams, potholes and speed cameras? If so, you’ll be pleased to know a new study has found the places in Britain you should probably avoid.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the research by Moneybarn found the Greater London area to be overall the most irritating area of the country for motorists. This was predominantly due to it being ranked the worst for traffic flow in the UK: according to the data, average delays in and around the capital last 102 seconds per vehicle per mile, and average speeds were documented at a sluggish 16.3mph.

This backs up a 2018 report by Inrix, a traffic data company, which ranked London as the seventh worst city in the world for gridlock, above all its European rivals including Paris, Rome, Berlin and Madrid. During the evening rush hour, traffic was found to move at 3.7mph in central London.

However, Moneybarn put the UK capital in fourth place in Britain for numbers of speed cameras, with 161 units in the Greater London area, according to data it gathered from speedcameras.co.uk (which uses location data sent in by motorists). Lancashire topped the table with 274 reported cameras, while Essex and the Greater Manchester area also reported to have more cameras, with 196 and 176 respectively.

Every region in the country is affected by Potholes, according to the research, with each county having on average 2,344 potholes peppering their roads. But you’re far more likely to encounter a poor-condition road in East Sussex than anywhere else in the UK, it seems: at 7,245 reported potholes, it had more than Norfolk, Oxfordshire, County Durham and neighbouring West Sussex combined.

Can You Still Be Banned For Drink Driving Even If You Are Over The Limit?

WHILE you might think you’re safe to drive after just a few drinks, you don’t actually have to be over the legal drink driving limit to break the law.

Police can still hit you with a hefty penalty if they think you’re in an unfit state to be behind the wheel after a couple of drinks, regardless of your breathalyser reading.

Most drivers caught intoxicated behind the wheel will end up with a drink driving conviction for being “in charge of a vehicle while alcohol level above limit” (conviction code DR40).

But there’s another offence you can be charged without ever failing a breathalyser test.

Police can charge you for being “unfit through drink” (conviction code DR50) if they believe you’re a danger on the road.

While officers will usually rely on a roadside test, they will occasionally use their own judgement when deciding if someone is impaired by alcohol.

Take No Chances With Your Tyres

Driving misconceptions surrounding used car tyres are putting UK motorists at risk of having a crash and by landing a hefty fine.

According to AA Cars, one in five (19 per cent) drivers have bought used tyres in the past and a further one in eight (13 per cent) plan to do so in the future.

Just seven per cent of motorists believe that they are as safe as new tyres but there is a level of ambiguity surrounding them on the whole.

A third (33 per cent) of drivers believe that they are either more cost effective than new ones or just don’t know whether new or used tyres offer better value.

A lack of knowledge could also potentially cost drivers as over half (62 per cent) of Brits were unaware of the correct legal minimum tyre tread depth for cars.

Six in 10 cars (56 per cent) also weren’t aware that the maximum fine for driving on worn-out tyres was £2,500 and three penalty points.

Almost half (42 per cent) of Brits didn’t know that a new tyre could have as much as 8mm worth of tread. In contrast, part-worn tyres often are sold with as little as 2mm worth of tread – just 0.4mm away from the legal limit of 1.6mm.

One in five (21 per cent) drivers believe that most used tyres sold in the UK actually comply with regulations. In reality, the vast majority (98 per cent) of secondhand tyres probably don’t.

You could be facing a huge fine if you are found guilty of any of these.

There are an estimated 32.9 million UK driving licence holders in the UK.

Why Van Drivers Must Follow HGV Rules

Tradespeople who use work vans to get to and from jobs could be hit with a fine of up to £300 if they exceed the UK daily driving hours limit, experts have warned.

Motoring specialists from LeaseVan.co.uk have highlighted the law which states that drivers operating a van for commercial purposes must observe the same working hour restrictions and rest period requirements as professional HGV drivers.

Drivers operating a work van for more than four hours per day are not permitted to be behind the wheel for more than ten hours and aren’t allowed to be on duty for more than 11 hours on any day in which they drive.

Working drivers can only reach the ten-hour limit twice per week. For other days that week, they are then restricted to nine hours – or 56 hours in a week and 90 hours in any fortnight.

Van drivers on the roads for business purposes must also get at least 11 hours rest daily, take breaks totalling at least 45 minutes after a maximum of four and a half hours of driving and take an unbroken rest period of 45 hours weekly.

Skipping breaks and exceeding these limits could see van drivers hit with a fine of up to £300.

It could also prove dangerous for both the driver and other road users, with tiredness and fatigue among the leading causes of road accidents and being potentially as deadly as drink or drug driving.

Don’t Get Too Close!

Dramatic new footage released shows the dangers of driving too close as motorists are urged to #staysafestayback while travelling on England’s motorway network.

The clip – captured by one of the dashcams in a Highways England patrol vehicle on the M6 in Cheshire – shows how quickly an incident can happen if motorists don’t leave plenty of space between themselves and the vehicle in front.

The footage shows several cars braking sharply and one being struck by a HGV as an unrelated incident unfolds up ahead of travelling traffic.

Highways England’s Head of Road Safety Richard Leonard said:

This footage is a startling reminder about the dangers of driving too closely to the vehicle in front.

It clearly shows that if you get too close to the car in front, you won’t be able to react and stop in time if they suddenly brake.

We also know that tailgating makes the driver in front feel targeted and victimised, distracting their attention from the road ahead and making them more likely to make a mistake.

It is intimidating and frightening if you’re on the receiving end. If that leads to a collision, then people in both vehicles could end up seriously injured or killed. We want everyone to get home safe and well.

Speeding Isn’t The Only Speed Related Issue On The Roads

A motorist who almost caused a major collision by pulling out of a lay-by without indicating has been banned from driving.

Paul Fullerton pulled out on to the A92 in Fife then crawled along the dual carriageway at a low speed.

Fullerton, 59, of White Dales in Edinburgh, appeared in the dock at Dunfermline Sheriff Court.

He admitted that on May 21 last year on the A92 between Kirkcaldy and Lochgelly he drove dangerously.

The charged stated that he exited the lay-by without signalling when it was unsafe to do so, causing other drivers to take evasive action.

It also said he drove at speeds far below the 70mph limit.

Depute fiscal Alistair McDermid said the incident happened at 1.30pm.

Fullerton was seen driving a white Hyundai out of the lay-by without using his indicators.

Mr McDermid said: “He entered into the traffic which was travelling at speeds of 70mph. Other drivers were not aware he was going to leave the lay-by when he pulled out.

“These drivers had to brake to avoid a collision. The accused then continued on his way driving at a speed considerably below the limit.
